A Message From Dave

TALK ABOUT COWBOYS…

When I was young, I looked up to cowboys.  I had a lot of good ones to choose from on TV; like James West and of course The Duke.  There were real cowboys, too. The rodeo kind.  Guys like Tom Ferguson, Leo Camarillo, and Larry Mahan.

I remember a line of outdoor apparel that was endorsed by Larry Mahan.  It was branded to be tough stuff; the kind of stuff you could wear outside that would take some abuse.  I remember the branded advertisements that stated “Larry Mahan spends 87% of his time outdoors.” It was a testament to the rugged, outdoor type that the American Cowboy represented.

So where are we spending most of our time today?  It seems too much activity has moved indoors.  As part of my work, I drive all over towns all around southern Idaho, going to visit folks at their homes to talk about landscaping.  I can tell you, it often seems like a ghost town wherever I go, as almost everyone (including kids) are all inside.

I also remember as a kid, when it was finally pitch black outside at night, my parents would finally coax me back into the house, but then usually only in the winter. In summertime I would even sleep outside in a big sleeping bag, often with friends, or even by myself.  It’s a fond memory still vivid in my mind.

I’ll get to a point now.  We would like you to take part in a revolution to get people back outside.  The campaign “Come Alive Outside” was a theme at our recent Home & Garden Show.  There are many, many benefits to shutting off the Wii and the computer games and getting outdoors.

Well, that’s enough writing for me, I have a sudden urge to get OUTSIDE!
