GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR LANDSCAPING PROJECT
Are you thinking about the possibilities of a new or refreshed landscape, paver patio or water feature? If so, you are probably wondering about the costs of doing your project and if you can choose the right company to work with. Here are some insights to help answer your questions and get you headed in the right direction.
IT ALL STARTS WITH IDEAS. Are there landscapes you have seen that you like? They can be in the form of pictures you have taken from places you have visited, pictures and ideas out of magazines, etc. If your project involves trees and plants, are there any particular ones that are your favorite, or are there any types you don’t want to use? List out or gather pictures of these as well.
DO YOU WANT TO DO THIS WORK YOURSELF? If so, we can help you with that as well! We have a great little tool to get you started, our LANDSCAPE DESIGN PLANNER. Simply stop by and ask for one, or call or email us and we’ll send you one. Once you have filled it out, simply call or stop back by and one of our friendly trained staff will help you make your ideas come to life. We are totally set-up with the experienced and creative landscape design staff, state of the art equipment, and hardworking, professional crews who know what they are doing to complete your project to exceed your expectations.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A PROJECT? The easiest answer is,” that all depends” on many factors. The size and scope of the project, for one. We can give you some idea of the timeframe when we meet with you. The farther you plan in advance, the better. Our crews get backed up quickly each year. We try not to get backlogged with work for longer than 3 to 4 weeks. A lot of new construction clients wait until their new home is complete to call, then they end up waiting a longer time for us to get to them. The best advice we can give is to contact our design team in the winter, or at least as early as possible in your process. That way you can have an idea of costs early on, so that those costs can be budgeted for. However, you can rest assured that once we start a project, we will work diligently to complete it in as short of timeframe as possible, to minimize the disruption to your lifestyle.
HOW MUCH WILL MY PROJECT COST? As a rule of thumb, on new construction the architects and experts say a minimum of 10% of the value of the building project. If you are considering a “knock your socks off” landscape, then consult with us for a closer approximation.
THE VALUE OF LANDSCAPING. Wise homeowners know that there is an excellent return on investment (ROI) from a professionally designed and installed landscape. In fact, a leading financial report tells us that it can have a 100-200% return value. The most popular home improvement inside the home, is consistently, the kitchen remodel. Value return on kitchen remodel is shown to have a maximum return on investment of 92%. Another way to look at it is, say you buy a nice shade tree for $100 and plant it in your yard, in 10 years, if someone offered you $100 for it, would you take it? Of course not! In fact, venture to guess you wouldn’t take $500 for it. What better investment is there than that? HOW DO YOU CHARGE FOR LANDSCAPING DESIGNS AND ESTIMATES? This all depends on what you want. If you desire a scale detail drawing that you can use at your disposal or to bid out to others, we charge a professional hourly fee. If you have a specific idea in mind and can show us it in detail, we can provide you an estimate, at no charge. If you have only some general idea of what you want, and need to be shown a sketch to be able to envision the project, we will charge a professional fee to design the project to the point you can envision what it would look like. If you hire us to then install this project, we will credit half the design fee towards your final billing.
WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A LANDSCAPER FOR MY PROJECT?
• Request a list of client references and contact them. Ask to see projects that are of similar size and scope that the company has completed.
• Compare how long they have been in business, staff training and experience, industry business accreditations and industry awards.
• Understand clearly and compare warranties.
• Make sure the contractor carries liability and workers compensation insurance and that you could be liable for accidents on your property if they don’t.
• Get a detailed proposal and be absolutely clear about the contractor’s terms of payment and work schedule.
