For Magic Valley Gardens and Landscapes

Improving Growing Conditions in Southern Idaho's Challenging Soils

Kimberly Nurseries provides soil products and amendments specifically formulated to address the common challenges of Magic Valley growing conditions. Our soil solutions help plants thrive in our region's typically alkaline, low-organic matter soil environments.

Understanding Local Soil Challenges

Magic Valley soils present several common challenges for gardeners and landscape managers:

Alkalinity

Most local soils have pH levels between 7.5 and 8.5, which can limit the availability of certain nutrients (particularly iron) and affect plant health.

Low Organic Matter

Our arid climate results in naturally low organic matter levels, reducing soil's ability to retain water and nutrients.

Compaction

Many developed properties have soils compacted during construction, restricting root growth and water infiltration.

Poor Structure

Local soils often lack the aggregate structure that promotes good drainage while retaining adequate moisture.

Nutrient Imbalances

Our native soils may have excessive levels of some minerals while lacking others essential for plant health.

Soil Testing & Analysis

Basic soil tests provide information about:

  • Organic matter content
  • Major nutrient levels
  • Texture analysis
  • Salinity concerns

Understanding your specific soil conditions helps determine the most effective improvements. We recommend soil testing for:

  • New landscape installations
  • Persistently problematic areas
  • Vegetable gardens
  • Properties with history of construction activity
  • Areas with visible plant stress
